Iguanas Reproducing On Galapagos Islands More Than A Century After Disappearing
A species of land iguanas that disappeared more than a century ago from one of Galapagos Islands, is reproducing naturally after being reintroduced there, a report in Newsweek said. A province of Ecuador, the islands had sufficient presence of iguanas with the early 20th century but they disappeared later. They were reintroduced at the Santiago Island in 2019 to restore the natural ecosystem there, the outlet further said quoting Ecuador's environment ministry. The iguanas have been listed as vulnerable species in the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. The Galapagos Islands are a Natural World Heritage site and located about 1,000 kilometres off the coast of Ecuador. They are home to a distinctive flora and fauna.
