Odisha Approves Threefold Salary Hike For MLAs Ministers And Ex-Legislators
The Odisha Assembly on Tuesday approved a major revision of salaries and allowances for sitting and former MLAs, increasing their monthly remuneration from ₹1.11 lakh to ₹3.45 lakh. This marks one of the steepest hikes among Indian states.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling announced the change after the Assembly unanimously passed four amendment bills enabling the revised pay structure, effective retrospectively from June 2024, when the current Assembly was formed.

The salaries of the chief minister, ministers, speaker, deputy speaker, leader of opposition, and pensions for ex-MLAs have also been increased nearly three times.
The bills include a provision of ₹25 lakh compensation to the family of a sitting MLA in case of death. They also empower the government to revise salaries and pensions every five years through ordinances without needing new legislation.
At present, an ordinary MLA receives around ₹1.11 lakh per month. Under the new structure, the total package rises to ₹3,45,000, which includes:

₹90,000 salary

₹75,000 constituency/secretarial allowance

₹50,000 conveyance allowance

₹10,000 for books and journals

₹20,000 electricity allowance

₹50,000 fixed travel allowance

₹35,000 medical allowance

₹15,000 telephone allowance
Ex-MLAs will now receive a monthly pension of ₹1.17 lakh, including allowances for medical and travel needs. They will also get an additional ₹3,000 per term served.
According to the new provisions:

Chief Minister: ₹3,74,000/month

Speaker & Deputy Chief Minister: ₹3,68,000/month
